SISHUMITRA

Background of Sishumitra

Venganoor Grama Panchayath, in partnership with MetaQuest Creative Communications has taken a decisive step to fill this gap by evolving an early child development program, that would specially focus to the needs of children from the marginalised sections of the society.

Pre-primary education in Kerala lacks a proper perceptive. Majority of the early child care centers are in private sector. These institutions play only a very limited role. Most of these centers are run as schools preparing the children for primary education. Instead of providing inputs for functional development, children are taught reading, writing and arithmetic, in the process killing the in born creative streak and curiosity. “Anganwadis”- Child centres run by local self governments, hardly follow any developmental strategy or plan, except providing few toys to play with. These are mere daycare centers, where children just while away the line.MetaQuest Creative communications chalked out a comprehensive project to upgrade the Anganwadis by providing training to the staff, and bringing an attitudinal change among community members through a series of programs.

What is Sishumitra?

Sishumitra is a five year project providing a sound child development strategy and programs to upgrade the skills to carry it out. Training is given to different sections involved in child development. It is equally a community based social awareness program empowering every section involved in the mission, in a continuous basis. It is a project stimulating socio-economic change by handing over a powerful developmental tool to every member of the community. Child development is the prime concern of every family in Kerala. But child development as a program with an easy implementation model is introduced in Kerala for the first time. It is envisaged as a sustainable program needing minimum resources, run by the community.
