Venganoor Panchayat
of Thiruvananthapuram district where the project is carried out is a
back ward costal area. Nearly 40% of the population is economically
and socially backward and marginalised. Among a population of 50,000
consisting 10,000 families, 4698 families are below the poverty
line. One third of the population belongs to economically weaker
scheduled caste community. Among the population 20% are children. A
total of 19 anganwadis (Pre-Schools) here cater to 600 children of
0-6 years of age. Apart from benefitting these 600 children directly
the project caters to hundreds of other school children in the area.
The world famous
tourist destination Kovalam Beach and its neighboring areas are in
the project area.
